the Duomo Cathedral
The Duomo is in the heart of the city about 500 metres from Piazza della Signoria near Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery.
Distance to the central train station is 10 minutes walking.
The bell tower was built according to Giotto's designs in 1334 and is 85 metres high (the dome is 91 metres high).
Impressive is the enormous dome which dominates the skyline of Florence.
It was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi between 1420 and 1436 and can be climbed with spectacular views of the city.
The facade of the cathedral we see nowadays is a neo-Gothic composite designed by Emilio de Fabris and was built from 1871 to 1887.
On the picture on the left is the octagonal "Battistero"(Baptistery) in front of the Duomo.
It has famous bronze Renaissance doors which are decorated with panels crafted by Lorenzo Ghiberti.
(the original doors are removed to the museum and replaced by copies)
